BENGALURU: The Karnataka Power Corporation Ltd (KPCL) has initiated the tendering process for setting up a plant on the outskirts of the city which will be generating 5 megawatt (MW) from the garbage being produced in the city. The project may start functioning completely within six months, if everything goes according to plan.

The project will be located at Bidadi in Ramanagara district. German firms are joining the tender process, the pre-bid meeting is scheduled for later this month.

As per the KPCL engineers, the cost of the project will be Rs 70-100 crore; the 5MW W2E project is scalable up to 15 MW capacity.

The BBMP and KPCL have signed a memorandum of understanding on the 1st of January to supply refuse-derived fuel (RDF) to KPCL Bidadi site cost free.

Recently the KPCL managing director V Ponnuraj, in a letter to BBMP, had asked the civic body to supply 150-200 metric tonne (MT) of RDF for a week on a trial basis to the Bidadi site for enabling the power utility which will be used to analyse the characteristics of the fuel before finalising the design of the plant.

An engineer of the BBMP said, “But sending 150MT of RDF on a daily basis for a week won’t be possible. Also, the BBMP does not have a palletiser, hence can provide only baled source feed to KPCL. The latter should look at setting up a 2MW plant initially, assuming a supply of 100MT of RDF daily, expandable to 5MW once dry waste collection is streamlined across all 198 wards.”

A company named Firm Green, Mavallipura has been given a nod by the BBMP to perform a feasibility study to take up W2E plant at Mavallipura.
