Hyderabad: Successfully tackling the location hurdles and space constraints at the narrow and highly congested Bhoiguda underpass, the L&T company has completed the erection of crucial Bhoiguda Metro ROB of corridor-II (JBS-Falaknuma), HMRL MD NVS Reddy announced after inspecting the work today.
NVS Reddy said because of the curvy nature of the Metro Rail track, which takes a sharp left turn over the existing Bhoiguda Road Under Bridge (RUB) of Indian Railways, the Metro ROB here had to be designed as a wide steel bridge with a width of 64 ft and length of 221 ft at a height of about 40 ft over the road level in the shape of a box. He said inside this box bridge, a composite deck slab i.e., a mixture of steel and reinforced cement concrete slab is being laid to accommodate two Metro Rail tracks.
The entire steel bridge, which was manufactured in a specialist factory in Ghaziabad, simulating the site conditions of Bhoiguda, was dismantled and brought in special containers to the Old Gandhi Hospital premises in Monda market area of Secunderabad. The steel bridge was then reassembled piece by piece, using a large number of high strength steel plates with about 51,000 imported HSFG (high strength friction grip) bolts. The reassembling was done on top of specially erected trestles (steel support structures) in a limited assembling area between Secunderabad West Metro station of corridor-II and the Bhoiguda RUB.
The reassembled steel bridge weighing 960 MT was pulled by means of a special pulling arrangement provided on top of the Metro pier (pillar) cap and the trestles. The steel girder which was supported on imported American Hillman Rollers fixed on the trestles was pushed with the help of guiding rollers and the front launching girder was pulled by high strength hydraulic jacks. The main launching operation was successfully completed in less than six hours of “traffic block” given by Indian Railways during which the train operations were suspended temporarily.
