Chanchalguda: The Prisons Department has decided not to supply fuel and other lubricants at the petrol pumps under its management to the bikers who don’t wear helmet.

According to prison authorities, the prisons department has decided to issue instructions to all its 13 existing petrol pumps and eight upcoming petrol pumps all over Telangana not to supply fuel and other lubricants to all those bikers who were not wearing helmet.

The department was expecting that since getting petrol from the bunks run under it has acclaimed quality and purity, the bikers would choose to wear helmet, instead of foregoing quality supply of fuel from the petrol pumps run by prisons department.

The department hopes to send a strong message to the bikers as well as the society. Meanwhile, other private petrol pumps will also receive the message in a positive way and may in turn adopt the same strategy to encourage bikers to wear helmet.

The measure will bring down the number of accidents and fatalities, even though it may have an impact on the sale of the petrol at the centres. “The business and earning revenue has not been our aim, but to provide service to the society and this measure will bring impact,” hoped V K Singh, Director General of Prisons and Correctional Services.

V K Singh held that the Prisons Department has played a great role of social responsibility in the recent past. The prison industries has been a big employer of ex-prisoners that has led to reclaiming of lost human resources in the form of criminals back to the society.

Their gainful engagement in prison industries has also led to reduction in the number of prisoners in the jails and occurrence of crime, added the DG.
