Trafficking in women has been going on in the Agency areas of the district unchecked if the 46 missing cases of women registered with various police stations in the district are any indication. Adilabad: Trafficking in women has been going on in the Agency areas of the district unchecked if the 46 missing cases of women registered with various police stations in the district are any indication. It may be recalled that recently a widow, Lalita, was sold to a Gujarati by her relatives for Rs 1.80 lakh.
According to human rights Boath mandal president Purushottam Reddy, two women from Vankidi in Asifabad district (sold to brokers from MP), one each in Kerameri, Adilabad and Neradigonda were suspected to be sold to brokers from Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh. In fact, unofficial estimates put the total number of trafficked women from the district at 200.
Taking advantage of financial problems of Lalita, a widow with a child, with the help of a Gujarati, Rekha, was disposed of to a person from Madhya Pradesh.
In some cases, parents were paid a pittance to traffic their daughters and in other cases, women are lured with offers of work in Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra and being sold at a price of Rs 5-6 lakh to brokers there. Kidnapping women to traffic them to other States came to light in Indravelli mandal.
The parents in Agency areas of the district are worried about the safety of their daughters. They say that there is no guarantee of their safe return to home.
These innocent women find themselves ending up in red light areas in places like Mumbai, marrying aged persons in Rajasthan and Gujarat, working as servant maids in the houses of some and they are being subjected to harassment from their handlers. The hapless women sometimes make a phone call to their parents earnestly requesting them to free them from the flesh trade.
Parents allege inaction from the police in spite of lodging complaint with them over the missing cases. Tribals’ associations are blaming the police that the police are tutoring the women to testify in court that they had married the aged persons on their own volition to mislead the trial.
The tribals appeal to the government that it was high-time the State government intervened to put an end to trafficking in women from the district.
