​Hyderabad: The B-school, Vignana Jyothi Institute of Management (VJIM) has organised its first International Conference on the ‘Impact of Current Events on the Future of Businesses’, convened by K Srinivasa Prasad. The two-day international conference, supported by the Association of Management Development Institutions in South Asia (AMDISA) brought to the fore some significant current affairs such as the Brexit, Trump Presidency, Chinese crash, protectionism and technology disruptions and discussed how they are leading to a changing global landscape impacting businesses. 32 papers were presented at the conference from the academia and corporate world in India, Nepal, and the USA and several eminent speakers participated in the conference.

Satish Raghavendran, Director-Analytics at Cognizant Technology Services (CTS), delivered the inaugural address and spoke on the theme ‘Analytics Landscape: Solutioning to Transformation’. He traced the origin and evolution of analytics, starting from credit decisioning to handling unstructured data sources to agile insights delivery.

Raghavendran expressed that analytics is on a virtuous cycle, leading to real time decision making. Dipak Ghosh, Professor of Economics at the Emporia State University (USA), talked about globalisation and recounted how countries with fewer capital controls were impacted during the Asian Financial Crises of 1997 more than countries which had more regulated economies.

India and China, with their open economies, were able to achieve high economic growth rates through international trade, Ghosh reminded. He suggested that interlinkages among economies around the world means that good economic conditions and benefits are significant and widespread. Ghosh also pointed at Brexit as a case in point how Britain wanted to avoid chaotic end as they wanted to maintain access to European without being dictated to by EU.

In his address at the occasion, K Harishchandra Prasad, General Secretary-Vignana Jyothi, focused on the need for businesses to learn to compete in a dynamic business environment. The fourth Industrial Revolution, triggered by technology, enforces fast and continuous pace of learning, he emphasised.

Ch S Durgaprasad, Director-VJIM, who started the conference proceedings, highlighted how technological advancements are causing disruptions to businesses and how the workforce must embrace change and upskill for long-term sustainable growth. G Anjaneya Swamy, Dean-School of Management at Pondicherry University has concluded the conference with his Valedictory Address.
