Vijayawada: Super specialty services block being constructed at a cost of Rs.150 crore in the New Government General Hospital in Vijayawada will be readied in one month as the works reached the last stage. The share of Central and State Government is Rs.120 crore and Rs.30 crore respectively.

Specialty services like urology, nephrology, cardiac surgery, medical oncology and surgical oncology services can be extended to the patients in the hospital block after its completion.

The building construction works including the electrical works are nearing completion. Now the authorities are gearing up to fix the equipment in the new block. So far, the GGH is providing services like cardiology, neuro surgery, plastic surgery etc.

Vijayawada Government General Hospital is the only big hospital available to the people of Krishna district. Patients from Khammam and West Godavari districts also avail the medical services at the GGH.

Now, the State government has to recruit the super specialty doctors, professors, assistant professors, nurses and para medical staff in the new block. Every day, between 1,500 and 2,000 patients visit the GGH for treatment.

The existing cardiology department has no sophisticated equipment. White card holders are visiting the private referral hospitals under the Arogyasri scheme. Poor and middle-class cardiac patients non-white ration card holders are depending on the private hospitals or going to Guntur General Hospital for the treatment.

Now, the problems of cardiac patients will be solved if the State government recruits specialist doctors in the Super specialty block. A senior medical officer said now the State government has to recruit the staff as more than 90 per cent works of the new block were completed
