Vijayawada: Machilipatnam, the district headquarters of Krishna, is in a grip of fear following the threat of Cyclone Phethai looming large. Since Sunday afternoon, heavy rain is lashing Krishna district forcing people to remain indoors.
The district administration set up call centres at all divisional headquarters like Machilipatnam, Gudivada, Nuzvid and Vijayawada. The district administration announced one-day holiday for schools and educational institutions on Monday in view of Cyclone Phethai. Collector B Lakshmikantham cancelled the Meekosam programme on the same day.
The third number cyclone warning has been announced at Machilipatnam Port on Sunday. Minister for Youth Welfare and Sports Kollu Ravindra visited the Machilipatnam town along with other officials of the Revenue and the Fisheries departments.
The Minister inspected and reviewed cyclone precautionary measures at Manginapudi beach. On this occasion, he discussed the situation with the officials. The district made arrangements like food, drinking water, medicines, ambulances and generators.
According to officials, nearly one lakh acres of paddy is still in cultivation stage. As per the sources, paddy harvesting has so far been completed in about three lakh acres.
Presently, the farmers are hurriedly completing harvesting in 50,000 acres in Krishna district and particularly in seven cyclone-prone mandals in East Krishna.
The State government has provided crop cutting machines and gunny bags. But the farmers are facing agriculture workers shortage as all of them are currently busy with work.
Minister Kollu Ravindra, who visited Manginapudi beach along with officials of various departments, instructed the officials of the marketing department to open paddy purchase counters during night time also.
The Fisheries Department is creating awareness among fishermen not to venture into sea. The fishermen belonging to Krishna district returned from sea after receiving warnings from the Fisheries Department.
Krishna District Collector B Lakshmikantham visited the Manginapudi beach and other cyclone-prone areas. He instructed the officials to shift the people who are facing cyclone threat to shelters.
He said that the government had set up sirens in several villages to warn the people. Krishna District Joint Collector Vijay Krishnan is monitoring the cyclone relief operations from the Collectorate in Machilipatnam. Nearly 2,000 staff have been deployed for relief operations.
