Visakhapatnam: A three-day training programme on ‘Mechanical Terminal Equipment – Bulk Handling’ was inaugurated by Visakhapatnam Port Trust (VPT) Chairman M T Krishna Babu at Conference Hall of Vigilance Department of VPT here on Wednesday.

Indian Ports Association in collaboration with Centre for Research and Industrial Staff Performance, Bhopal is organising the training programme from December 5 to 7. The objective of the programme is to understand standard operating and maintenance procedure of portal cranes and to take necessary safety precautions in handling portal cranes.

Addressing the training programme, Krishna Babu briefed the trainees of the port operations, its infrastructure and stated that Ministry of Shipping has taken up mechanisation in cargo handling operations among all major ports for better productivity.

He also stated that in the past, ports used to compete among themselves and with private ports in India and after Nitin Gadkari, Minster for Shipping, assumed the post, the scenario of ports changed from national to international competition and in that perspective all the ports and the employees should gear up to reach the international standards and to that effect training should be imparted to all employees especially technically personnel.

P L Haranadh, IRTS, Deputy Chairman, VVS Sreenivas, IRSME, Chief Vigilance Officer, VPT, spoke on the occasion and HoDs, senior officers and staff were present.
