Vijayawada: Vijayawada First Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Judge P Bala Venkata Koteswara Rao sentenced nine months imprisonment and Rs 60,000 fine to the three accused in cybercrime case.

The three accused were identified as Adigun Babatunde Kamal of Nigeria and Mohammed Tohid and Ziya-ul-Hussain of Uttar Pradesh. An illegal staying case was also registered against Nigerian Adigun Babatunde Kamal. Nigerian was sentenced four months imprisonment and Rs 25,000 fine additionally for illegal staying in the country.

A case of cybercrime was registered at Machavaram Police Station in 2017. The accused introduced himself through an e-mail and later asked financial help from the complainant by giving fake promise. Later, they withdrew Rs 4.5 lakh from the complainant bank account after getting the account number.

City Police Commissioner Dwaraka Tirumala Rao lauded the cybercrime police team members. He said that cybercrime cases are on the rise and people should be careful and not to disclose the bank and personal details to strangers. The case was the first of its kind in the city that a foreigner was sentenced to imprisonment and fined, he said
