Tirupati: First of its kind in Rayalaseema region, officials of the Municipal Corporation of Tirupati (MCT) have called for the tenders to set up a floating solar power generation plant with a capacity of 4 megawatt (MW) in Kailasagiri Reservoir near Srikalahasti town in the district.

The solar power plant was initiated at a cost of Rs 12 crore to reduce the huge power bills generated by pumping water from Kailasagiri Reservoir to Tirupati city. The MCT paying Rs 70 lakh per month for pumping water from Kailasagiri Reservoir to Tirupati city covering a distance of 40 km.

The funds were sanctioned as part of smart city project. Setting up floating solar power plant in Kailasagiri Reservoir is very convenient as the MCT maintains water levels round the year for supplying drinking water to temple city.

MCT Commissioner Vijay Rama Raju has directed the civic officials to implement the project as central government advised civic bodies to generate at least 10 per cent of power in green energy methods. It is also learnt that 22 roof-top solar power units were also installed on the MCT and other state government buildings in Tirupati.

“Our aim is to become self-reliant in green energy generation and to stop the paying the electricity charges to SPDCL for pumping water from Kailasagiri Reservoir to pilgrim city,” said MCT Executive Engineer B Chandrashekar to The Hans India.
