​Vijayawada: The students of Telugu, Library and Political Science departments of Siddhartha Mahila Kalasala participated in Grama Darshini programme to mark World Literacy Day at Yanamalakuduru village near here on Monday. The students distributed slate and pencils to senior citizens at Mandal Panchayat Samithi and school. They explained about the importance of education.

They conducted essay-writing competition on topics like Vanam-Manam and Swatch Bharat. The Library and Political Science department students explained the senior citizens the importance and benefits of reading books and to be a literate.

The college principal Dr M Nalini said that this programme was organised to create awareness among the senior citizens in villages on the importance of education and being literate. Village executive officer Krupa Rao, MPTC Krishnaveni and college faculty and students participated.
