Vijayawada: Praising the Anganwadi workers and helpers for providing excellent service by taking care of children and women in the state, Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has announced that the state government would construct own buildings for all Anganwadi centres in the state by 2020.

Addressing an awareness meeting conducted by the department of women and child welfare at the Indira Gandhi Municipal Corporation Stadium here on Thursday, Naidu said 8,318 Anganwadi centres were functioning in permanent buildings and another 7,716 centres were functioning in rented buildings.

He said all the Anganwadi centres would have permanent buildings by 2020 and the government would make efforts in that direction. Stating that the government was serving nutritious food to 6.25 lakh pregnant women and children with annual expenditure of Rs 250 crore, he said the TDP government initially increased the salary of Anganwadi teachers from Rs 4,200 to Rs 7,000 and now again raised to Rs 10,500 considering their good services.

He said the government would distribute cell phones to all Anganwadi staff by August 15. He informed that 257 Anganwadi projects were taken up in the state serving lakhs of women and children. He assured the women that the government would take stringent action on those involved in crime against women. “If any person commits serious offence against women, that will be the last day for his life,” he warned.

Naidu said Bala Sanjeevani and Amruta Hastam were the two important schemes being implemented by the TDP government for women and children. He said the government has identified 14.90 lakh children in the age group of six months to three years and supplying nutritious food and added efforts were on to eradicate anaemia in the state by offering nutritious food to women and girls.

Later, Naidu participated in Srimantam programme and offered bangles, Kumkuma and turmeric to some pregnant women and blessed them. Minister for women and child welfare Paritala Sunita explained the schemes being implemented for women and children in the state.

Ministers Devineni Uma Maheswara Rao, Kollu Ravindra, Prathipati Pulla Rao, ZP chairperson Gadde Anuradha, Andhra Pradesh Mahila Commission Chairperson Nannapaneni Rajakumari, district collector B Lakshmikantham, MLAs and MLCs participated in the event. Anganwadi workers, helpers, teachers and others from various districts attended the awareness meeting.
