Eluru: Municipal workers staged a dharna at Eluru Municipal Corporation here on Thursday demanding that the government solve the long pending problems of the workers.
The workers reached the corporation office led by Andhra Pradesh Municipal Workers and Employees Union and staged a dharna. Speaking on the occasion, union general secretary B Somaiah warned that if the government failed to solve the problems of the workers, they will intensify the agitation.
He said that the sanitary workers, who got their right of weekly- off after a long fight now did not get the weekly offs. The work burden is heavy on the sanitary workers in the city. He stated that during the night times, these sanitary women workers attending the duty.
He pointed out that in Eluru, 180 workers retired during this year and no new worker was appointed in that place and the officials giving the work to the present workers. He reminded that the GO No.151 was released by the government one year ago but so far the corporation is not paying the wages as per the GO.
He demanded that the government implement the GO immediately with arrears. Later, the workers’ leaders submitted a memorandum to Municipal Commissioner A Mohan Rao. Union leaders Mavuri Srinivas, Pothuraju, Ramanamma, Arjunamma, Appanna took part in the dharna.
