Amaravati: The State government has decided to change the plans of main road connecting Amaravati capital city. The Amaravati Development Board and Capital Regional Development Authority (CRDA,) are jointly making plans for new designs with technical support of IIT - Madras.

Initially, a four-lane road was proposed for seed capital area from Kanakadurga Varadhi. Later, the design was changed for six-lane road. Currently, the CRDA has invited new plans for eight-lane road following the instructions of Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu.

This project assumed much significance, as it is main entrance for seed capital area and Amaravati capital city. The government has started the works in the name of Seed Axis Road with an estimated cost of Rs 600 crore, which would be completed as two parts.

The first stretch (9 km), which begins at Dondapaadu and ends at Undavalli, began two months ago. The second stretch starts at Undavalli and ends at Kanakadurga Varadhi. The whole stretch is designed as flyover due to railway track and old Madras road in the middle of the stretch.

The CRDA officials were directed to acquire land for the project, as 50 acres of land would be required for the eight-lane road works. The lands in the proposed stretch from Varadhi to Undavalli are valuable. Apart from this, some encroachments are challenge for smooth completion of the work.

Meanwhile, it is being said that the government suggested some changes in the designs for the second stretch. According to the eight-lane road designs, a tunnel road was proposed at Seethanagaram hill. However, the officials are now looking for alternatives to construct the flyover over the hill and taking curve instead of straight road.

It is reliably learnt that the second stretch of road works will be taken up after completion of first phase. The works on the first stretch are expected to be completed within six months. Besides, the authorities proposed to construct the flyover in the model of popular Gemini Flyover in Chennai.

Speaking to The Hans India Amaravati Development Corporation chief engineer P Ramurthy said that IIT - Madras was making designs for eight-lane road expansion works. “Local experts will be given some design works,” he added.
