Mummidivaram: The price of the rare ‘Pulasa’ fish, the 'pulusu' of which is relished by the people of the Konaseema area, has virtually hit through the roof because of short supply during the Godavari floods. It is being sold at a price of Rs.3,000 to Rs.5,000 per kilogram.

This has become particularly noticeable in view of the ensuing season from August to October. However, thanks to the current flood in the Godavari, the season has reached a feverish pitch as there is a separate trade dealing in the Pulasa fish. Fishermen have become busy.

The Pulusu is a special dish in the Konaseema area, because of its preparation in pots, and also the flavour. The dish becomes mouthwatering when it is consumed a day later.

Because of the demand for the fish, fishermen are importing the 'Vilasa' variety from West Bengal and Odisha and passing it off as Pulasa and selling at a high price.

While 500 gm of Vilasa is available for Rs 50, they are selling it at Rs 1,000 to Rs 1,500 on the either side of the Yanam-Yedurlanka bridge. Consumers of the Vilasa fish are sure to get disappointed as it is not that tasty.
