Vijayawada: A new Police Act is on the cards for the Capital Region Development Authority (CRDA) area, with the State police working on it. The Act will give scope for expansion of the Vijayawada Police Commissionerate, besides elevation of police stations with additional staff.
- Guntur Urban to merge with Vijayawada
- Thulluru gets sub-division status
- Police plan night vigil in CRDA villages
- Local police stations to be elevated
The Director-General of Police has directed senior officers to coordinate with Vijayawada Police Commissioner A B Venkateswara Rao and senior officers from Guntur in preparing the Act.
The government has elevated the Vijayawada Commissionerate from the IG rank to additional DG much before zeroing in on the Thulluru area for locating the capital. According to information available, the Act will lead to merger of the Guntur Urban district with the commissionerate. It will mean Guntur Urban will have a DCP assisted by ACPs for crime, traffic and law and order. The police are studying the need to shift the commissioner’s headquarters to Mangalagiri or Tadepalli to be available for officers in Vijayawada and Guntur.
The Act is likely to have Thulluru as the sub-divisional headquarters, with the Amaravathi and Mangalagiri police circles attached. The government has decided to upgrade/strengthen the Amaravathi, Pedakurapadu, Tadikonda, Thulluru, Mangalagiri and Tadepalli police stations with CIs as SHOs, assisted by at least three-four SIs.
The department plans to intensify vigilance in the CRDA zone even before the actual capital work begins. For this the new Act is being readied. The police want to ensure that the post-capital establishment developments are under control and have no involvement of anti-social elements in land/property deals. They feel the need to keep a strict vigil on chain-snatchers, burglars and other offenders.
Meanwhile, the City Police Commissioner has initiated several measures to make the capital region safe. "We need to take certain measures right from the beginning to ensure safety of the people in the capital, even if they cause inconvenience" said Rao when he introduced night vigil here two weeks back. The police are planning night vigil in the capital region where the flow of people, in the name of realtors, insurance companies, banks, car and two-wheeler dealers, is increasing daily.
