Vijayawada: Lifestyle change besides many other reasons was found to be the main factor for male infertility. A few reasons behind male infertility are exposing oneself to environmental pollution, sleep deprivation, irregular sleep timing, obesity and bad food habits besides occupation.

For people working at high temperatures, exposure to heat which is more than core body temperature is also contributing factor for infertility. The other leading problem for infertility is working on laptops and usage of cell phone. Getting exposed to radiation besides alcohol consumption, smoking and addiction to recreational drugs are other reasons.

Different working pattern is also a key factor in urban population. In rural population, exposure to pesticides on a daily basis is the reason for infertility, said Nova IVI Fertility Centre Dr Sree Lakshmi. Speaking to ‘The Hans India,’ Lakshmi said that there was a drastic fall in sperm count of males aged between 30 to 40 years. The count was between 20 to 30 million per 1 ml when compared to 60 to 70 million count in the past.

Short term infection and silent infection, which cannot be seen as fever were also the reason for infertility. She said that before confirming the patient suffering from infertility, a detailed history would be taken such as lifestyle, past medical history, surgeries which would obstruct tubules.

A few tests would be performed for confirmation, like semen analysis. Tests like WBC, genetic tests, chromosome test and others would be done. Based on the test reports the patient would be treated with antibiotic medication, hormone substitute. If the case demands surgery, it would be done, she added.
