Vijayawada: Doctors of Andhra Hospitals successfully performed a rare heart surgery on a 10-day-old baby girl, and gave the infant a new lease of life.

Addressing a press meet held in the hospital on Thursday, pediatric interventional cardiologist Vikram said that the baby, born at Ponnuru in Guntur district, had been suffering from transposition of great arteries in which the blood vessels from the heart were on the opposite side.

The team of doctors performed the 16-hour surgery and shifted the baby to the pediatric cardiac ICU. He said, “The operation was successful and the baby is recovering.”

Board of Cricket Control in India (BCCI) Chairman MSK Prasad, who was also present at the press meet, said that he would extend his support to the Andhra Hospitals for performing the pediatric heart surgeries. He said that he would also conduct an awareness campaign on heart diseases in children.Cardiologist Srimannarayana and Dr Ramesh were present.
