Commissioner of Horticulture and ex officio secretary (H and S) Chiranjeev Chowdary on Monday said that a three-day Organic-cum-Nursery Expo would begin at Siddhartha College of Hotel Management here on Tuesday. The department of horticulture in association with Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and International Competence Centre of Organic Agriculture (ICCOA) is organising the event. The ICCOA is the knowledge partner for the first organic –cum- nursery expo.

Addressing a press conference here, the Horticulture Commissioner said that the event would act as a platform for linking businesses and farmer groups, thus enabling the market access for national and international trade. It would comprise of local organic farmer, farmer groups and companies exhibiting a diverse range of food and non-food organic products and service. Organic fruits, organic vegetables, processed products, organic honey and value-added products would be on display, he added.

Referring to nursery exhibition, he informed that micro irrigation systems, agri export services, pesticides, shade net nurseries, fertilizers, seeds etc are on sale. He further said that micro irrigation was the panacea for many problems such as climate change. The Centre was according top priority to micro irrigation by allocating 17 per cent in Central budget to Andhra Pradesh, he said.

He said the State government was committed to the farmer-centric programmes and identified horticulture sector as one of the top priority sectors. Horticulture crops in the State account for 15.82 lakh hectares with a production of 233.24 lakh MTs. The State stands first in chillies, cocoa, lime, oil palm, papaya and tomato. It also occupies second place in cashew, mango and sweet orange.

Elaborating on the present status, he said that there are 20 departmental farms and more than 50 accredited private nurseries in the State. The department has established 16 small nurseries for production of quality plant material. He released a brochure of the event at the press conference. The expo would showcase 40 organic companies, nurseries, 35 stalls for industrial implements. A total of 140 stalls would be set up at the expo, the organisers said.
