Hosur based 2-wheeler manufacturer TVS Motor outsold Hero MotoCorp in scooter sales in the first quarter of the 2017-18 financial year. The SIAM released sales data for the April-June quarter reveals that TVS sold 2,49,077 units while Hero managed to sell 2,09,790 units. TVS is now the second largest scooter seller in India after Honda.

While TVS grew at a healthy rate of 35.51 percent when compared to the same quarter last year, Hero MotoCorp registered a marginal negative growth of 0.51 percent. Hero and TVS sold 2,10,876 and 1,83,805 units respectively in the first quarter of 2016-17.

Other manufacturers like Honda, Suzuki and Piaggio grew at 22.15, 58.30 and 90.9 percent respectively. Interestingly, only Hero MotoCorp and Mahindra 2-wheelers saw a decline in sales in the April-June quarter.

The scooter sales of TVS is backed by the Jupiter which not only sells in the highest number but is also the only scooter in the segment to be offered in the most colour schemes (the Jupiter is available in 10 colours). TVS is also gearing up to launch an all new scooter this fiscal to increase its share in the scooter market even further.

Rapid urbanisation, increasing traffic and more and more women folk getting into occupation and profession has led to scooterisation in India where today one in every three 2-wheelers on the road is a scooter. This demand also comes from male customers who are ditching their motorcycles for a scooter because of the ease of riding and gearless convenience that a scooter offers.
