The Global hunger Index is designed to raise awareness as well as understanding of the struggle against hunger.
The 2021 Global Hunger Index (GHI) points out the dire hunger situation in a world coping with multiple crises.
Depending upon the current GHI projections, the world as a whole as well as 47 nation’s in specific would fail to achieve a low level of hunger by 2030.
India has slipped to 101’s position in the Global Hunger Index (GHI) 2021 out of 116 nations
Earlier, India was in 94th position for the year, 2020 and it Is behind its neighbors Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal.
18 nations, including china, Brazil and Kuwait, have shared the top rank having GHI score less than 5.
The GHI score is calculated based on 4 indicators, they include • Undernourishment • Child wasting ( children have low weight for their height) • Child stunting ( children below 5 years, have low height for their age • Child mortality ( mortality rate of children under the age of 5)
The report revealed that the India has shown improvement in other indicators such as below 5 yrs, mortality rate, prevalence of stunting among children and prevalence of undernourishment owning to inadequate food.
The 3 C’s which include conflict, climate change and Covid-19, threaten to wipe out any progress which has been made against hunger in the recent years.
Eventhough the Global Hunger Index scores reveal that, the global hunger has been on the decline since 2000, the progress is slowing.
