Kolkata: West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankar was blocked by students University of Calcutta from entering the University campus on Tuesday. The Governor was the chief guest at the university's Convocation function. The function has been delayed and the Governor could not be escorted to the stage, when media reports last came in some time ago.

Students gheraoed his car and shouted slogans of "go back". Visuals played on television channels showed security persons attempting to clear the way for the Governor as a group of students surged forward blocking his convoy's progress. The Governor was escorted to a room by officials and security persons delaying the commencement of the Convocation.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was also scheduled to attend the event but excused herself saying that she could not attend the convocation on account of other engagements.

The latest incident at the Calcutta University comes weeks after the Governor was blocked in a similar manner from entering the Jadavpur University. These incidents are being seen as a spill-over of the Chief Minister-Governor face-off in the state.

Mamata Banerjee and Governor Jagdeep Dhankar have been at loggerheads on a number of issues. The Governor has been vocal about many matters, much to the disapproval of the Trinamool Congress chief.

While the TMC sees Governor Dhankar as a stooge of the Centre, the Governor, on his part, cites non-cooperation from the West Bengal government.

In a similar incident, BJP MP Swapan Dasgupta was confined to a room for hours by protesting studebts in Viswa Bharati University campus where he had gone to give a talk.
