The West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankar urged Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to be more empathetic towards migrant workers returning to the state.
The West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankar urged Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to be more empathetic towards migrant workers returning to the state. In a series of tweets on Friday, the West Bengal Governor appealed to Mamata Banerjee to extend a warm invitation to those returning home as they were our own people. In his tweets, the West Bengal Governor described the migrant workers returning to the state as our relatives. He added that "they were forced to leave the state due to stomach upset."
Jagdeep Dhankar, referring to migrant labourers returning to West Bengal, added that "they are our wealth, no one will throw them away." In his Twitter posts, Dhankar said that "our
children may want to return to their home, to their loved ones, when they are in a difficult situation. In the context of the global epidemic, they deserve a warm invitation to return home."
The West Bengal Governor found it unjust and heart-breaking to find that the migrants were being referred to as likely spreaders of COVID-19. He said that it is "unjust, extremely frustrating and heart-breaking to label them as COVID-19 contagious." He added that in their case, "all the rules and instructions related to COVID-19 can be followed even while keeping human values intact."

It is very likely that the West Bengal government would respond to this veiled criticism on the part of the Governor. The state is recovering from massive destruction caused by Cyclone Amphan.
In the past, there have been several instances of run-ins between Mamata Banerjee and Jagdeep Dhankar on various occasions. This may prove to be yet another flashpoint in their less than cordial relations over the past several months.
