UP MLC Election Results: Samajwadi Party Retains Varanasi Teachers’ Seat, Leads in Graduates’ Constituency
In Short
The Samajwadi Party retained the Varanasi Teachers’ seat and led in the Graduates’ constituency in the UP MLC elections, while the BJP won five seats ahead of the 2027 Assembly polls.

Samajwadi Party (SP) chief, Akhilesh Yadav
The Samajwadi Party (SP) under Akhilesh Yadav has also claimed victory in the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council polls, keeping the Varanasi Teachers' seat and looking towards a victory in the Varanasi Graduates' seat. The results are significant as Varanasi is Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s parliamentary constituency.
The SP also won the seat in Agra and a few other seats while Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won others. It was an election for 11 seats in the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council that is being closely monitored in the runup to the Assembly polls in 2027.
A small group of BJP secures a few MLC positions
The BJP captured the Lucknow Teachers' constituency, Bareilly-Moradabad Teachers' constituency, Meerut-Saharanpur Teachers' and Meerut-Saharanpur Graduates' constituencies. The results showed the party won five seats overall and was leading in one more seat.
The BJP's performance in several constituencies did not attract much attention however, the results of the SP in Varanasi did.
What are teachers’ and graduates’ constituencies?
Teachers’ and graduates’ constituencies are part of the electoral system for Legislative Councils in states that have a bicameral legislature, consisting of a Legislative Assembly and a Legislative Council.
These seats are for certain groups, such as qualified teachers and registered graduates, to choose representatives for the upper house of the state legislature.
The provision was intended to ensure that there was a variety of views in the legislatures. Those who advocated the system at the time of drafting the Constitution believed that educated people's representation would bring down the power of caste, religion, money and muscle power in the elections.
The results of the Uttar Pradesh MLC polls are being seen as a preview of the political battle to come ahead of the Assembly elections in 2027 in the state. The performance of the SP in Varanasi and BJP's success at various other seats has added shades of a new dimension to the state's political landscape.
The findings provide an opportunity for both parties to gauge the support they have from certain groups of voters ahead of the next Assembly election.
