Berhampur: Millet, basically a diet of the tribal people, has found its way onto the plates of five-star hotels now.

Local women prepare eatables made from millet such as ‘namkin,’ sweets and cakes. Pizzas, momo, different kinds of pastries like ‘manda’ and ‘kakara’ and soup prepared from millet are selling like hot cakes at Kashipur ‘haat’ (market) in Rayagada district.

Buying delicacies prepared from millet ultimately helps these women to earn income.

They even earn praise for making cakes and sweets. Efforts are being made to promote millet products in a big way, said Project Manager Ashwini Kumar Mishra.

Women involved in preparation of these delicacies from millet thanked the government and private agencies for their support.

The venture is being supported by Industrial Development Bank of India (IDBI) and implemented by Entrepreneurship Development Institute of India (EDII), said a woman who has taken the responsibility of providing market facility.
