Lynching To Castration : Nation wants speedy justice
MPs come up with controversial punishments for Disha rapists
New Delhi: Disha's brutalization and subsequent murder, which has spurred the nation into a protest-mode seeking stricter and immediate punishment to the guilty, unified politicians cutting across political lines in giving vent to their anger.
On Monday as soon as Parliament got reconvened, both the Houses took up the issue to condemn the brutality.
Recalling 'Nirbhaya" incident, many MPs wondered why atrocities against women continued in the country despite stringent laws.
All of them were unanimous in seeking quick justice with some even suggesting 'instant justice' on the lines of the mob justice.
In the Rajya Sabha, MPs suggested controversial ways to deal with rapists. Samajwadi Party (SP) MP Jaya Bachchan said that rapists should be lynched.
"People now want the government to give a definite answer. These people (accused in rape case) need to be brought out in public and lynched," she said.
Leader of the Opposition Ghulam Nabi Azad of the Congress said the problem couldn't be solved through legislation alone.
Azad said that there was a need to "take a stand together against such crimes". Rajya Sabha Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu said, "These men do not deserve mercy. Why should they be given appeal by the state and Central governments?"
"What is required is not a new Bill. What is required is political will, administrative skill, change of mindset and then go for kill of the social evil," Venkaiah Naidu said.
Vijila Sathyananth of AIADMK demanded death penalty for the accused in the rape-murder case. Castration was another way suggested by MPs to punish the rape accused.
DMK leader P Wilson said that courts should be empowered to surgically and chemically castrate convicted rapists before they are released from jails.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said his government is ready for discussion on crime against women and to explore strongest provisions in laws.
He said, "This act has brought shame to the entire country. It has hurt everyone. The accused must be given the most stringent punishment for their crime."
Meanwhile, Congress and BJP MPs from Telangana tried to gain traction for their anti-TRS tirade.
Congress MPs Revanth Reddy and Uttam Kumar Reddy questioned the efficacy of the police force of the state, while BJP MP Sanjay went a step ahead and preferred to call it as a crime 'that happened in the heart of Hyderabad' while seeking an awareness campaign.
Uttam Kumar Reddy hit out at the state government for its excise policy which promoted liquor consumption everywhere. He bemoaned the lack of patrolling on the highway.
TDP MP K Rammohan Naidu condemned the incident and regretted lack of safety for women on the streets of India.
YSRCP MP Vanga Geeta termed it heinous crime and sought harsh punishments which would make criminals think twice before resorting to such crimes again.
Revanth Reddy attended a rally at Jantar Mantar by students protesting against the incident and addressed the students.
He was critical of the state government and said fast tract courts established were of no use and rapists were going scot free or getting lesser punishments by approaching higher courts.
He criticised the ministers who tried to project the victim in a faulty manner and sought punishment for them also while seeking hanging of the four culprits within a month.
Union Minister of State for Home Affairs G Kishan Reddy said his government is willing to bring amendments to laws pertaining to the safety of women and children.
While addressing the Lok Sabha, Kishan Reddy said, "There is zero tolerance towards crimes against women and children. Our government will soon bring requisite amendments to CrPC and IPC."
He said the government will try and bring in the changes in this winter session of Parliament if possible.
