A five-storey building housing a boys’ paying guest accommodation collapsed in Delhi’s Satya Niketan on Sunday afternoon, with police estimating that around 40-50 students may have been inside when the structure came down.
The Delhi Fire Services, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Delhi Police, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), the Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), Civil Defence and other agencies have been mobilised for the rescue operation.
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said the agencies were working on a “war footing” to locate and rescue those trapped under the debris.
6-7 Students Rescued, Three Critical
Rescue personnel have so far pulled out around 6-7 students from the rubble. Those rescued were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.
The AIIMS Trauma Centre said three of the rescued students were in critical condition.
Police said they received a PCR call about the building collapse at around 1:34 pm at the South Campus Police Station.
Students Feared Trapped Under Debris
According to preliminary information cited by police at the scene, approximately 40-50 students were believed to be inside the building when it collapsed.
Local residents identified the structure as a boys’ PG. An eyewitness cited by ANI said the five-storey accommodation was known as “Hostel Daze”.
The eyewitness claimed that the adjoining structure had also collapsed and that several students were trapped inside their rooms beneath the debris. The exact number of people trapped is expected to become clearer after authorities examine the PG’s registration records.
The eyewitness reported several students were seriously injured and rescuers were struggling to reach the ones buried under rubble.
Students in the immediate area also reported that a large number of residents would likely have been inside the PG on Sunday as it was a holiday day.
Rescue efforts are still ongoing and the debris is being sifted for the presence of survivors.
