New Delhi: Campaign pitch for the upcoming assembly polls got increasingly bitter as Union Home Minister Amit Shah continued to target Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) supremo, Arvind Kejriwal over the protests against Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). Shah dared the AAP chief to visit Shaheen Bagh, the epicentre of protests in Delhi against the contentious Act.

The Union Home Minister pointed out that the Delhi police had booked the JNU student, Sharjeel Imam, described as the mastermind behind Shaheen Bagh protests, for sedition. The police booked Imam for creating communal disharmony with his speeches including his comment to try and cut "the chicken's neck" and sever the northeast from the rest of the country.

Arvind Kejriwal and his deputy, Manish Sisodia had earlier, dared the BJP to act against the Shaheen Bagh protesters and arrest Sharjeel Imam. They reminded Shah that the Delhi police was under the Union Home ministry. Kejriwal added that it was up to the BJP to clear the Shaheen Bagh protest site as the demonstrations were causing a lot of inconvenience to local residents. Both Kejriwal and Sisodia however, treaded cautiously, insisting that they stood by residents of all areas of Delhi.

BJP leaders, in recent days, have stepped up their attacks on Kejriwal by criticising AAP sharply for its support to anti-CAA protests. The party has brought Shaheen Bagh and CAA into sharp focus, while alleging that AAP was exaggerating its development work.

Meanwhile, AAP has consistently steered clear of a debate on the CAA issue. It has maintained that the people of Delhi would vote for Kejriwal on the basis of development.
