The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won four seats in the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council elections, while the Samajwadi Party (SP) secured one seat as counting continued for the remaining six constituencies on Wednesday.

BJP had a lead in the seats of Gorakhpur Teachers' and Agra Graduates' while the SP had a lead in the seats of Varanavi Graduates', Agra Teachers', Lucknow Graduates' and Jhansi Graduates' seats. The outcomes, if these are to be believed, could be a big improvement for the SP compared to the 2020 elections.

The Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council on Friday voted in 11 seats that will be up for election this year in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly in 2027. The results are being closely watched, both sides are preparing for the next elections.

Four seats to be filled by the BJP

Dinesh Kumar Goyal, Shrichand Sharma, Hari Singh Dhillon and Umesh Dwivedi were re-elected to the Meerut Graduates', Teachers' seats, Bareilly-Moradabad Division Teachers' and Lucknow Teachers' Division seats respectively by the BJP.

The SP candidate Lal Bihari Yadav, is re-elected as the Varanasi Division Teachers' for another term.

During the 2020 elections to the MLC, the BJP had got six out of 11 seats and two independent candidates had won their seats. The SP has won three seats, and seen its performance at the Assembly polls significant as it goes on to bolster its position in the run up to the 2027 Assembly polls.

Conflict between the people of Agra and Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, over the counting of votes.

Some BJP and SP bumps were seen as votes were tallied in Agra town while opposition candidates claimed there were irregularities in Gorakhpur.

The trend was reversed in the third round when Sanjayayan Tripathi, who contested from the Gorakhpur-Faizabad Teachers' Division, boycotted the counting process claiming the trend has changed off guard in the third round.

Tripathi said that independent candidate Rajeev Yadav had a lead of about 450 votes till the votes began coming in for the BJP candidate. He said it was a ruse. The allegations have not come from a report that it is reported to have been established independently from.

Aakash Agarwal, who is the SP candidate, had been keeping the BJP candidate at bay since Round 2 of counting in Agra, which concluded around 3 am on Wednesday.

The counting was started here at 8 am on Tuesday in Lucknow, Varanasi, Agra, Meerut, Jhansi, Bareilly and Gorakhpur. This was a lengthy process, and included the stages of sorting and bundling ballot papers before the actual counting of the votes in the single transferable vote system.

Importance of the MLC elections

The elections for Legislative Council are different from Lok Sabha and assembly elections as only specific electorates vote for specific seats. Uttar Pradesh is one of the states having bicameral Legislature which includes Legislative Assembly and Legislative council.

The Legislative Councils are composed of members who have a term of office of six years with one-third of the members retiring every two years. Elections are held for people who are 30 years or older.

The electoral groups for electing the councillors include the local authorities and registered graduates and eligible teachers. The governor also appoints those with experience in other fields such as literature, science and social service.

The result could provide an indication to the BJP and the SP of the sentiments of these voters ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh.

Always love to raise the unraised matter. In a world of worries, I am always ready to come over my comfort zone and taking the step ahead of spreading awareness.
