Trump Questions Brazil Election Results After Lula’s Victory, Calls Poll ‘Rigged’
In Short
A Brazilian official expressed confidence that Washington would eventually recognise Lula’s win, arguing that the voting figures were difficult to dispute.

US President Donald Trump
In a speech on Monday, October 26, U.S. President Donald Trump challenged the credibility of Brazil's presidential election, saying it seemed to be “rigged” but providing no evidence to substantiate the claim. Leftist candidate Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva won a fourth term defeating rightist rival Flávio Bolsonaro.
Speaking to reporters at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland, Trump described the election as a poor reflection on the global democratic process and said elections must be beyond dispute.
When asked whether he would take any action over the result, Trump responded that his responsibility was to govern the United States, not Brazil.
Trump Says He Did Not Endorse Any Candidate
Trump maintained that he had not formally supported any candidate in the Brazilian election. However, he has previously expressed support for former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro, Flávio Bolsonaro’s father, while the broader MAGA movement has also shown affinity for the Bolsonaro camp.
Following Lula’s victory, Jair Bolsonaro refused to concede and called for the election results to be annulled.
A Brazilian official expressed confidence that Washington would eventually recognise Lula’s win, arguing that the voting figures were difficult to dispute. The official also indicated that a refusal by Trump to recognise the result would not force Brazil to change its government.
Lula Vows to Defend Democracy
Lula’s victory marked a political comeback as he secured another term against his right-wing rival. His win also drew criticism from some Trump supporters, including Steve Bannon, who urged the US administration to cut diplomatic ties with Brazil.
Lula has previously challenged Trump on issues including tariffs. After his victory, the Brazilian leader vowed that dictatorship and fascism would not return to the country.
Addressing supporters gathered in São Paulo, Lula described the result as historic and reaffirmed his commitment to democracy.
The election has drawn international attention amid tensions over Brazil’s political direction and the response of the Trump administration to Lula’s victory.
