Visakhapatnam: Chief Postmaster General, AP Circle, Venkateswarlu released a special cover on the first woman freedom fighter Duvvuri Subbamma.
Born in 1880 in Draksharamam in East Godavari district, Duvvuri Subbamma, was married at the age of 10 and widowed at a very young age. Discarding fanatics, she became the first woman freedom fighter of Andhra Pradesh.
A devoted Gandhian, the freedom fighter travelled extensively across Andhra Pradesh and exhorted women to wear khadi. She worked for women empowerment and abolition of untouchability. She was dearly addressed as Desabandhavi.
She later started a school for women 'Santana Streevidyalaya' in the then Rajahmundry and the admissions in the institution were reserved for widows.
