Ongole: Public fronts, Left parties and Muslim minority organisations held a massive protest at the Collectorate here on Monday, demanding justice for Taushik, a student from Kanigiri who died at a residential coaching centre in Singarayakonda, and the death of his mother, Moulabi.

Taushik was a student at Sri Chaitanya Navodaya School and died under suspicious conditions on the campus on February 14, 2026. Though the school management claimed innocence and said that the boy might have committed suicide, his parents didn’t buy it. They complained to the police and approached the High Court for justice. The police said they cleared the parents’ and relatives’ doubts, and they cannot reveal much about the investigation publicly because the matter is sub judice.

Meanwhile, Taushik’s mother, Moulabi, who kept protesting in front of the school, consumed poison and died in the hospital on September 11. Since then, various public fronts, Left parties, Muslim minority organisations and other associations have demanded justice for Taushik and Moulabi from the police and government.

The organisations announced a Mega Dharna at the Collectorate, but the police agreed to issue permission for only a couple of hundred people and ultimately rejected it at midnight on Sunday, citing intelligence that the number of participants could reach thousands. So, the police tried to confine the leaders of the organisations to their homes and take them into preventive custody early in the morning, but the protestors reached the Collectorate. Police put up barricades around the Collectorate, and the grievance programme was cancelled. Police stopped several leaders who came in a rally at Old Market Centre and took them to Chimakurthi police station.

Among them were KVPS state general secretary Andra Malyadri, Agricultural Workers Union state treasurer Kankanala Anjaneyulu, Avaaz state secretary Mohammad Chishti, CITU district president Kalam Subba Rao and CPM city secretary Chikati Srinivasa Rao. AIDWA district secretary Kankanala Ramadevi and SFI leaders were also detained. Leaders said police held many more leaders and workers in other parts of the district.

Speaking at the dharna, MRPS founder president Manda Krishna Madiga demanded a CBI inquiry into Taushik’s death. He urged that those responsible for Moulabi’s death be punished under the law. He expressed anger over the way police handled permission for the dharna and the restrictions placed on protesters. He alleged that the TDP and the YSRCP are standing by those accused in the case. Leaders said politics should not interfere with delivering justice to the family.

Leaders including Congress Party Prakasam district president Shaik Saida, Vesepogu Balakotaiah, Chittipati Venkateswarlu, Paritala Koteswara Rao and others took part. Many Muslim minority leaders and people joined the protest. They demanded that authorities identify and punish those responsible as per law.

Krishna Madiga and other leaders later submitted a memorandum to Collector P Raja Babu. The leaders declared that they would continue the struggle in a democratic way until the family gets justice.
