Khammam: National Sports Day was celebrated at Harvest College here on Thursday to mark the birth anniversary of hockey player Major Dhyan Chand, popularly known as the ‘Hockey Wizard.’

The celebrations began with correspondent P Ravi Maruth and principal R Parvathi Reddy paying floral tributes to Major Dhyan Chand’s portrait and highlighting his contribution to Indian hockey and achievements for the country.

Various sports competitions were conducted for students, who participated enthusiastically and displayed their talent. Prizes were presented to the winners.

Speaking on the occasion, correspondent Maruth said sports were essential to identify and nurture the hidden talent among students.

He said students should learn to compete with sportsmanship and take lessons from defeat, adding that the institution gives equal importance to sports and academics. Junior College Dean Somashekara Sharma, in-charge Anil, faculty members, physical education teachers and students participated in the programme, which concluded on an enthusiastic note.
