Telangana eyes bigger rice exports to Philippines

Hyderabad: Minister for Irrigation, Food, and Civil Supplies N Uttam Kumar Reddy met Francisco P Tiu Laurel Jr, Secretary of Agriculture of the Republic of the Philippines, in New Delhi on Tuesday to explore expanding rice exports and bilateral trade between Telangana and the island nation. Secretary Laurel, holding a Cabinet rank equivalent to a Union Minister overseeing agriculture and food, held detailed discussions with the state delegation regarding potential trade collaborations.

Uttam Kumar Reddy highlighted that Telangana has emerged as one of India leading paddy-producing states, possessing extensive production capacities, modern rice-milling infrastructure, and the operational expertise required to supply substantial quantities of high-quality grain. Secretary Laurel responded positively to the initiative, indicating that the Philippines would evaluate sourcing larger rice volumes from Telangana through recognized government agencies, authorized importers, exporters, and local rice millers.

The meeting carries diplomatic and economic weight given the Philippines substantial requirement for imported rice and its ongoing efforts to diversify international supply chains. Uttam Kumar Reddy stated that Telangana offers competitive market pricing, dependable quality, and prompt delivery schedules, positioning the state as a trusted long-term trade partner.

Deliberations covered rice varieties, quality standards, pricing frameworks, procurement mechanisms, logistics, certification protocols, and sanitary requirements. Both delegations agreed that technical officials and industry representatives will examine operational aspects to formulate a practical roadmap transforming discussions into concrete commercial opportunities.

Uttam Kumar Reddy emphasized that expanding agricultural exports will unlock lucrative international markets, creating remunerative opportunities for Telangana farmers, rice millers, seed companies, and rural food-processing industries. He reiterated that the state possesses the structural strength, processing infrastructure, and production capabilities to serve as a reliable supplier of agricultural produce to the Philippines, ensuring enhanced income for agrarian communities and strengthening the broader state economy through sustained international commerce.
