Hafeezpet: Self-help is the best help, so goes the saying. Fed up with making complaints to the greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) in vain, the residents of Sharada Nagar took it upon themselves and brought back a dying park back to life.

"There are four parks in the colony with 220 residents. For the past one year, the park had been in a very bad condition. It park was covered with bushes and trash and due to this nobody would enter the park. The society members joined hands to clean it and beautify it," said Ravi Kiran, one of the residents of Sharada Nagar Colony.

Initially, the residents started developing the 2-acre GHMC park. "With the help of JCB we removed the bushes, and also cleared the trash and right now we are making a pathway, installing some lights in the park and also painting the walls and gate of the park.

Around 130 people are involved in this mission and the amount of Rs 1 lakh was collected by the residents. After cleaning the park we are planning to set up benches and some playing equipment for the children added Kiran.

"Several times we have complained to GHMC about cleaning and developing the park, but no action was taken. Especially, our kids were forced to play at home. So we have planned to do it by our own," said Surender, resident of Sharada Nagar Colony.

"We are planning to develop all the four parks and as right now we are developing the first park of the colony and the rest of the parks we would develop it later. Every weekend we take the mission of cleaning and developing the park and this task began in the first week of August," they said.
