Secunderabad: Balala Hakkula Parirakshana Vedika has demanded that the state government ensure that quality education is provided at government schools in the Cantonment Board area.

Speaking to media, district secretary of the association Lakshmi Narayana said that the association found that one out of every four Class 8 students studying in government schools in Cantonment Board area could not read words from Class 2 textbooks and one of every two students could not do simple divisions.

This was found when the Balala Hakkula Parirakshana Vedika, along with representatives of various people's associations and parents, inspected the education standards at government schools in Cantonment area.

Students of higher classes could not read even the most common words and could not do simple calculations, he said. It proves that the state education department has failed miserably in estimating education standards at government schools. He held education department responsible for poor standards at government schools.

Lakshmi Narayana demanded that the department take necessary measures to improve the standards as it may lead to social inequalities. He urged the government to consider it as an educational crisis and initiate measures to address it.

Providing quality education should be recognized as a constitutional responsibility of the government, he said. Bhagyalakshmi Thallula Sangham president Dasharatha Lakshmi and others participated in the press meet.
