Hyderabad: Agriculture Minister Tummala Nageswara Rao urged the Prof Jayashankar Telangana State Agricultural University (PJTSAU) to stand as a pillar of support for the farming community by providing modern technologies to improve productivity and ensure stable incomes. Addressing the gathering as chief guest at the 157th birth anniversary celebrations of Mahatma Gandhi at PJTSAU on Friday, Tummala commended Vice-Chancellor Prof Aldas Janaiah for organising the commemorations of Mahatma Gandhi and former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri.
The Minister said Gandhi’s non-violent struggle and sacrifices enabled the country to breathe the air of freedom. He also praised the agricultural university, established by Lal Bahadur Shastri, for its contribution to the agricultural sector. He called upon university staff to constantly support farmers with new technologies and help lay the foundation for a new India.
Prof Aldas Janaiah said the event was organised to create awareness among youth about the history of the freedom struggle and inspire them by remembering the sacrifices of that era. He said essay writing and elocution competitions were conducted for students from 15 universities across the State. He recalled that Lal Bahadur Shastri dedicated the university to the nation in 1965 and called for efforts towards a ‘Viksit Bharat’.
Rajendranagar MLA T Prakash Goud urged people to follow Gandhi’s footsteps and praised the university’s service. Tummala felicitated freedom fighters Unnam Venkayya, G Narsayya and Venkateswara Rao, and Gandhian scholar and High Court advocate Dr A Raghu Kumar. Prizes were presented to eight students. Patriotic cultural performances were also held.
