Only 2 teachers for 130 students at govt school

Gachibowli: The government apathy towards education has come to the fore as officials failed to file a report on a government school lacking basic amenities, sought by NCPCR (National Commission for Protection of Children Rights), New Delhi.

A social activist, Akshay Kumar had filed a complaint that the government school lacks basic amenities under RTE (Right to Education) Act, 2009, in the NCPCR.

Acting on the complaint, on October 7, 2019, the NCPCR gave an order to the District Collector and DEO to inquire into the matter and take appropriate action on the same. A reminder was also issued by the NCPCR on November 13 asking the officials to submit a report within 20 days. But unfortunately, the plea has fell on deaf ears and the officials failed to file a report, said Akshay Kumar.

As per the complaint, for a school with a strength of 130 students there are just two teachers to manage and teach at the Keshavnagar Government Primary School in Gowlidoddi Road in Gachibowli. G Venkatesh, headmaster said, "Due to lack of teachers, we are hard-pressed to manage the studies of students from class I to V which is taking a toll on teachers and students as well."

Adding to this, the school lacks other basic amenities such as mid-day meal not being provided regularly, improper classrooms, no proper compound wall and lack of washrooms. Not only are the students, even teachers are suffering due to unhygienic surroundings. There are only two washrooms allotted for a strength of 130 students; 62 boys and 68 girls.

The school has five classrooms which have no proper ventilation and lights and fans. Due to this, the students have to sit in the verandah of the school. A few classes are also taken in the open in the ground with dusty and muddy surface. The school even lacks proper blackboards causing inconvenience in teaching and studying.

Meanwhile, with compound wall broken many anti-social elements enter the school premises during nights. Many consume liquor and leave the bottles, plastic glasses and other waste items within the school premises. The teachers alleged that sometimes broken glasses of bottles were found in the classrooms which can be dangerous as it could hurt anyone.
