Hyderabad: Congress leader P Vijaya Reddy has approached the Telangana High Court seeking directions to the Election Commission to withhold the notification for the proposed Khairatabad Assembly by-election until her pending election petition against former MLA Danam Nagender is resolved. The High Court has scheduled the hearing for Tuesday. Vijaya Reddy filed the original election petition in 2024 challenging the validity of Danam Nagender election from Khairatabad, raising specific objections regarding details furnished in Form 26 disclosures. She requested the court to ensure the by-poll process remains paused until a final verdict is delivered on her petition.
The legal move follows the disqualification of Nagender as Khairatabad MLA pursuant to a Telangana High Court judgment. Subsequently, the Assembly Secretariat issued a notification declaring the constituency vacant with effect from April 23, 2024. The Supreme Court later dismissed Nagender appeal against disqualification, leaving the seat officially vacant and clearing the path for by-elections. Vijaya Reddy fresh petition aims to prevent the issuance of a poll schedule prior to the conclusion of her 2024 case.
