Neknampur: Dhruvansh, an NGO, distributed 500 paper bags to locals and exhorted them not to use plastic. The members of the NGO said that last year, 1,000 cotton bags were distributed and a few volunteers had eco-friendly converts for life.

Mahesh, a volunteer, said, "We started using the waste paper to make paper bags and whenever we go to the market we only use paper bags." A cotton bag costing Rs 35 was given out free to shopkeepers and in communities.

On weekends, the volunteers also visit kirana stores and exhort people on the advantages of using eco-friendly bags. Last week, the team visited 50 shops.

Schools will also be participating in these activities, and once they re-open, the organisation wants to involve people of all ages, so that the future generations can also know the importance of keeping their lakes clean.
