120 accident-prone spots have been identified in Hyderabad, Cyberabad and Rachakonda Commissionerates, out of which around 19 accident-prone spots belong to roads which were constructed by the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC).

Hyderabad: 120 accident-prone spots have been identified in Hyderabad, Cyberabad and Rachakonda Commissionerates, out of which around 19 accident-prone spots belong to roads which were constructed by the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC).

The remaining accident-prone spots come under the Hyderabad Road Development Corporation Limited (HRDCL) and other roads under National Highways Authority of India (NHAI).

In a review meeting which was held by the police department officials and GHMC officials on road accidents, police department informed about the accident-prone spots across the city.

Speaking to The Hans India, Mohammad Ziauddin, Chief Engineer, GHMC, said, "We have got the list from police department about the accident-prone spots which comes under GHMC and we will conduct joint inspection and discuss measures to be taken to reduce the spots."

Nearly 50 per cent of accidents happen due to negligence of drivers, less visibility on the roads, lack of streetlights, tree branches left on road side and sharp curves that make it difficult to view vehicles and persons coming in opposite direction.

The Commissioner sanctioned Rs 1.53 crore to install the railings on the roadside and to make the lane marking and zebra crossing visible to the drivers as well as the pedestrians. "We will install signage boards, pedestrian crossing line, rumble strips as well as provide necessary adequate light on the roads for better visibility after the joint inspection in next week," he said.

The identified accident-prone spots in GHMC roads include Farooq Nagar bus depot in Falaknuma, Kandikal Gate flyover, GPO Abids, near ENT hospital in Koti, near Indira Park Junction, near Ramkrishna Mutt, Vidyanagar Cross Road, Chilkalguda Cross Road, Warasiguda Cross Road, near Yousufguda Check Post and three to four locations near Secunderabad Railway Station.

At these spots, the police department instructed the GHMC to construct road dividers, zebra crossing, rumble strips, lane marking and many other measures to reduce the accidents in city. Along with these spots, the police department also identified around 50 accident-prone stretches in city and in that 18 to 19 stretches belongs to the GHMC.

• A category: Twenty or more accidents on same spot in three years

• B category: Ten or more accidents on same spot in three years

• C category: Five accidents on same spot in three years

MAJOR CAUSES
