The NYAY scheme announced by the Congress party president in his manifesto has made all the parties to rethink, which is likely to snatch the votes from the poor and middle class and students towards Congress from other parties.
The Congress president while announcing the scheme said that source of this scheme of Rs. 3.6 lakh crore which is equivalent to defence budget for the entire year would be pooled up by taxing big people.
I doubt whether this is feasible because year on year the leaders went on telling that they would collect tax from the higher echelons, but so far nothing had been achieved. It is clear that all the political parties do not dare to touch them for fear of election funds.
Hence it is quite evident that the lower middle- income group and higher middle-income group only can be taxed. The rates of GST cannot also be enhanced as there is already a hue and cry on the initial rates which were later on reduced.
More over this form of income transfer will be addictive like reservation and one cannot suddenly stop this.
The political system forgets it's duty to address the existing issues like farmers' woes, unemployment, eradication of poverty, providing basic amenities on long term basis, instead of solving them always on short term basis which would again recur.
These types of freebies fall heavily on the taxpayer who is the ultimate loser. The tuition fee reimbursement, providing meals at schools and host of others did not yield the required results.
Knowing fully well all these things the parties go on promising so many freebies to improve their vote bank is not good for a democratic country like India which would spoil the economy as well. At least we hope that the new government will stop these and save the democracy.
