Sulthan Movie Review & Rating {2.5/5}

Sulthan is the new Indian Tamil-language action thriller film, written and directed by Bakkiyaraj Kannan, and produced by S. R. Prakash Babu and S. R. Prabhu under the banner Dream Warrior Pictures. The film stars Karthi and Rashmika Mandanna, the latter's debut in Tamil cinema. The film also released in Telugu with the same title. The film unit promoted the film well and is hoping for a super hit.

Story:

Vikram aka Sulthan (Karthi) is a Robotics Engineer in Mumbai who returns home after his father Sethupathi's (Nepolean) demise. Then, Vikram decides to reform his father's close aide Mansoor and all the 100 henchmen. What did Vikram do to reform them? Why did they turn against him? What happens in the end? Forms the story of the movie.

Performances:

Karthi is the show-stealer in the film and he has justified his role with his acting. He has greatly impressed with the performance in the film. His character has a lot of scope for performance and he pulled it off ease. Rashmika Mandanna did a good job in essaying her role. Yogi Babu's scenes are funny and added light-hearted comedy to the film. Napoleon is worth appreciating. Madaiyan Bob and Hareesh Peradi delivered honest performances. Ramachandra Raju and Nawab Shah are good in their roles. The rest of the actors also made their presence felt.

Technical Aspects:

Director Bakkiyaraj Kannan took a very simple story with a few twists and turns. Though the screenplay is predictable, the comic scenes will keep the audience hooked. The narration is fast-paced and the director executed the script perfectly. Production values by S. R. Prakash Babu and S. R. Prabhu under Dream Warrior Pictures are lavish. The music is too good. Though the songs are average, the captivating tunes became one of the gripping factors that will keep the audience hooked. The cinematography is decent. The visuals are bright and colorful. Editing could have been better. Dialogues are well-written. The runtime is crisp.

Verdict:

Karthi is trying to balance his filmography by choosing experimental and commercial films. Sulthan falls in the second category. The film offers nothing new and is a replica of hundreds of commercial films we have seen in the past. But the treatment and Karthi's performance make it an engaging watch. People who don't like commercial films cannot bear this film. It can engage mass audiences for sure. On the whole, Sulthan is a mass masala entertainer which is saved by Karthi's performance. Watch it only if you like commercial pot-boilers.
