Women’s rights, equality take centre stage at women’s conference

Mangaluru: Viewswere exchanged on September 5 on the injustices faced by women, denial of rights, social inequality and the need for women’s empowerment at the ‘Rise and Reclaim’ women’s conference held at Town Hall, Mangaluru. The conference highlighted the importance of strengthening women’s voices, safeguarding their rights and promoting greater social and economic empowerment. The programme was organised by the Women India Movement (WIM), Mangaluru City District, and brought together dignitaries, women activists and social workers from various fields. Shahida Tasneem, National General Secretary of WIM, inaugurated the conference. Speakers included former Karnataka minister B T Lalitha Naik, women’s rights activist Mamata Yajaman, WIM Karnataka State President Fatima Naseema, Advocates Hina Ijaz and Harshita J K, WIM Karnataka State General Secretary Nasriya Bellare, SDPI Karnataka State Committee member Misriya Kannur and other prominent participants.

Their shared message was that women must speak up for their rights and advance more substantially in social and political arenas. The conference itself carried the message of women’s rights, dignity, equality and empowerment.

A flag was hoisted at the start. Samiya, Ashika and Shafin rendered a revolutionary song. Ayesha Bajpe, Vice President of SDPI Mangaluru City District, welcomed the house. Misriya Kannur made the introductory speech.

The programme later presented the field committees and declared the Mangaluru City District WIM committee. Resolutions dealt with forthcoming activities of the women’s organisation and with struggles to be undertaken for women’s rights.

Mementos were given to the chief guests. Ayesha Yasmin, WIM Mangaluru City District President, delivered the concluding speech. Minaz Mulki, General Secretary, WIM Mangaluru City District, offered thanks.

The meeting closed successfully with the aim that women’s voice should become stronger still, that organised struggle should proceed for rights, and that women should recover their just place.
