Cyber crime case filed over objectionable post targeting Home Minister

A suo motu case has been registered by the Cyber Crime Police in Bengaluru over an objectionable and allegedly provocative social media post targeting Karnataka Home Minister Dr. G. Parameshwara. The controversial post was shared on an X (formerly Twitter) account named “Hindu Jaagruthanagu,” triggering concerns over hate speech and communal tension.
According to police officials, the post carried a derogatory headline questioning the integrity of the Home Minister and linking it to an incident involving a professor in a medical college reportedly associated with him. Authorities have invoked provisions under the Information Technology Act and Section 299 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), citing deliberate intent to incite hatred and offend religious sentiments.
The post included a video and captions alleging that a Muslim professor had inappropriately proposed to a Hindu student and was subsequently assaulted by other students. Investigators say the language used in the post was inflammatory and appeared aimed at creating division between communities.
The controversy stems from an incident reported on March 23 at Siddhartha Medical Sciences and Research Centre, where a professor, Dr. Abdul Rehman Shariff, allegedly offered a chocolate to a student during class and proposed to her. The student reportedly confronted him in the classroom, questioning his behavior. The professor is said to have claimed that there was CCTV evidence of prior interaction, prompting the student to demand proof.
The situation escalated when other students, angered by the incident, allegedly assaulted the professor. Videos of the altercation surfaced on social media, sparking widespread debate and outrage. Police sources stated that the viral post misrepresented the incident and added a communal angle, making it more sensitive. “We have taken suo motu cognizance as the content had the potential to disturb public peace and promote enmity,” a senior officer said.
Authorities are now working to identify the individuals behind the X account and trace the origin of the content. Officials have reiterated that strict action will be taken against those misusing social media platforms to spread misinformation and hatred.
