Bengaluru: The Karnataka State Backward Classes Commission has filed a complaint with the High Grounds Police seeking criminal action against individuals circulating fake caste census data for the Social, Economic and Educational Survey-2025 on social media.

In the complaint, Commission Member-Secretary K. A. Dayanand stated that the statewide survey was conducted from September 22 to October 31, with the online participation window extended until November 30 for those who missed the initial phase. The survey process is still ongoing. The commission clarified that several cases related to the survey are pending before the High Court. On September 26, the commission submitted an affidavit assuring the court that all collected data would remain confidential and not be leaked to any individual. Dayanand stated that the commission has strictly adhered to confidentiality norms.

However, false data has been widely circulated on WhatsApp groups under the title “Karnataka State Caste Census Report,” mentioning fabricated population figures for various communities including Lingayats, Vokkaligas, Kurubas, Edigas, SCs, Brahmins, Muslims, Christians and others. The complaint highlights that these numbers are entirely fake and have no connection to the ongoing survey. Dayanand has requested police to file criminal charges, investigate the source of the misinformation, and take necessary legal action against those responsible.
