Indian Engineering Service-2020
Engineering Services exam comprise of engineers who work under Government of India and designated a Class I officer. They administer a large segment of public sector economy, which constitute of Indian Railways, Power, Telecommunications, Central water engineering, Defense Service of engineers, Central Engineering Service etc.
Engineering Services exam comprise of engineers who work under Government of India and designated a Class I officer. They administer a large segment of public sector economy, which constitute of Indian Railways, Power, Telecommunications, Central water engineering, Defense Service of engineers, Central Engineering Service etc. The nature of work performed by these officers largely depends on their engineering branch and the Service cadre they are recruited in. The career progression goes smoothly attaining high esteem. The first position offered is that of Asst. executive engineer and the hierarchy ends at the position of Chairman/Managing Director.
A combined competitive examination is conducted by UPSC every year for recruitment. The examination constitutes of a written examination followed by an interview for the personality test. The recruitment of qualified candidates is made under the following categories.
1. Civil Engineering 2. Mechanical engineering
3. Electrical engineering
4. Electronics & Telecommunication engineering
Eligibility: Age: 21 to 30 years as on 1st January of the year (relaxation a per rules)
Educational qualifications:
Degree in engineering or equivalent)
Date of Notification: 25 September 2019
Last date for application: 15th October 2019
Prelims examination: 5th January 2020 - Sunday 1 day
Main examination: 28th June 2020 - Sunday 1 day

Examination pattern Prelims: stage I (objective type papers two)
1. General studies- 200 marks
2. Engineering aptitude: 300 marks
The standard of paper in General studies and Engineering Aptitude examination will be as may be expected of an Engineering/ Science graduate. The standard of papers in other subjects will approximately be that of Engineering Degree examination of an Indian University. UPSC will declare eligible candidates for Mains examination. The marks obtained in prelims/ stage I examination will be counted for determining the final order of merit. It is unlike Civil Service examination pattern. There will be penalty (negative marking) 1/3 of the marks for wrong answers marked by a candidate in the objective type question papers.
Paper I- General studies- 2 hours -200 Marks. Common to all candidates.

l Engineering aptitude
l Engineering mathematics and numerical analysis
l General principles of design, drawing, importance of safety.
l Standards and quality practices in production, construction, maintenance and Services
l Basics of energy and environment
l Basics of project management
l Basics of material science and engineering
l Information and communication technologies based tools and their applications
l Ethics and values in engineering profession
Note: The paper in GS and Engineering aptitude will include knowledge of relevant topics as may be expected from an engineering graduate, without special study. Questions from all the above ten topics shall be set. Marks for each topic may range from 5% to 15% of the total marks in the paper.
Paper II will be Civil Engineering/ Mechanical Engineering/ Electrical engineering/ Electronics and Telecommunications engineering. – 300 marks- 3 hrs duration
Stage II
Two conventional type papers in Engineering discipline specific with duration of 3 hours and maximum marks of 600 (300 marks each). Conventional papers must be answered in English. Question papers will be set in English only. Two papers in the concerned subject for 3 hrs duration. Detailed syllabus is available on UPSC website.
Stage III: Personality test for 200 marks
Number of candidates to be summoned for personality test will be about twice the number of vacancies to be filled. In the personality test special attention will be paid to assessing the candidate's capacity for leadership, initiative and intellectual curiosity, tact and other social qualities, mental and physical energy, powers of practical application and integrity of character. Marks obtained in Stage I, Stage II and Stage III would determine the final ranking. Candidates will be allotted to the various Services keeping in of the ranks in the examination and the preference expressed by them for various Services/posts.
