Saswata Chatterjee on why ‘quality over quantity matters’
Saswata Chatterjee has a track record of choosing his assignments over quantity. Transitioning between Bengali cinema, Bollywood and streaming, the actor looks to find his characters in different spaces. Chatterjee’s latest venture in the streaming space, Clean Up Company is a crime-comedy series, where he steps into the shoes of police officer SP Indranath in the GSEAMS Productions series, currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
While he enjoys getting into varied characters of an eccentric genre, the actor says that he does not dwell much on his roles before stepping onto the sets. “I don’t think too much about character. Usually when I read a script or hear my director’s instructions, I get an initial idea of who my character is. But I feel that overanalyzing can make the process more difficult, I just keep the idea close and build my character around it,” he added.
Chatterjee further said that he always keeps it simple and does not get too involved in the process of finding himself in his characters. He feels that working with a script and direction helps him prepare effectively without putting unnecessary pressure on himself.
The actor also opened up about his views on the growing streaming space, which now has a huge amount of content for viewers to choose from. Chatterjee said that while the boom has provided several opportunities, he thinks that the industry must focus on creating quality content.
“Today, too much is happening and we all should concentrate on quality rather than quantity of projects. I feel it could be important for us to do less and make it better,” he added. As per the actor, his SP Indranath in Clean Up Company is an unusual mix of a crime drama with comedy and the show allows its characters to tackle absurd situations with a certain level of seriousness.
“I don’t think there’s a specific trick to what I do. I just understand my characters with the help of a script and find a certain connection that I feel comfortable doing on screen. In this industry, where too much is being made, I believe in quality over quantity,” he concluded.
