Vizianagaram: Rising onion prices bring tears

Vizianagaram: With the price of onion touching Rs 160-170 a kg, the situation is turned to worse from bad at Rythu Bazaars, where the commodity sold at subsidy price in the districts.

Though the marketing department is supplying onions at subsidy price of Rs 25 a kg to the consumers, the quantity is not enough for the daily use as the commodity was being widely used in the various dishes.

The police maintaining tight police security at Rythu Bazaars to control the crowds as thousands of customers standing in long serpentine queues since morning hours to get onions in subsidy.

On the other hand, at R&B Rythu Bazaar, the officials are distributing tokens to avoid rush and the consumers those who got tokens are only allowed to get the onions.

Now, the wayside vendors and tiffin centres are not dared to sell Onion Dosa, Onion Pesarattu and they striked out it from their menu card. Usually, the price of onion is not on par with chicken. Now, the price of onion is equal to price of chicken.

K Srilakshmi, a resident of ring road area, said "If I get one kilo of onions, I feel that I have saved around Rs 150 a day. Consumption of onions is much higher at my home. So, I have to stand in queue to minimise my kitchen expenditure."

Some grocery shops in the city also stopped selling onions. K Ramana, a small vendor at Thotapalem says, "At present I can't purchase the onions by paying such a higher price. If the price comes down suddenly, I will suffer huge loss. So, I stopped selling onions in my shop. This will be safe for me."
