Vijayawada: Left parties and the Congress have jointly called for chalo Assembly during the Budget session in support of their demand that the State government pass a resolution opposing the NRC and CAA.

The leaders of the Left and Congress parties, while speaking at a round-table conference here on Tuesday, resolved to organise chalo Assembly next month.

Leaders of the three parties, the CPI, CPI (M) and the Congress discussed the NRC, CAA and NPR and the policies being pursued by the State and Central governments. The CPI State secretary K Ramakrishna, CPI (M) leader M Gafoor, APCC working president N Tulasi Reddy and other leaders spoke on the occasion.

Ramakrishna said both TDP and the YSRCP are supporting the policies of the BJP. He said the YSRCP came to power with the support of Minorities, Dalits and weaker sections. But it was not passing a resolution in the Assembly against the NRC. He said the people have been staging protests in many parts of State for 70 days demanding that the State government pass a resolution, but the YSRCP government has so far not responded to it. He said that as many as 19 people died in UP alone in the agitation. He alleged the BJP was trying to implement NRC and CAA to divert the attention of the people from its failures.

MLC Katti Narasimha Reddy said a private bill would be introduced in the Council, urging the government to oppose the NRC and CAA in the State. He lamented crores of illiterate people are in India and questioned how they could produce the documents relating to place of birth of their parents.

Tulasi Reddy demanded that the YSRCP government oppose the NRC and CAA and pass a resolution in the State Assembly.

CITU State secretary and CPI (M) leader M A Gafoor, AITUC State secretary G Obulesu, former MLC Jelli Wilson, CPI State leaders Ravula Venkaiah, Akkineni Vanaja, CPI (M) leader Chigurupati BabuRao, advocate Abdul Mateen, Sk Muneer Ahmed and others spoke on the occasion.
